Managing Actuary

Job Description:

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Manager of Actuarial Services to coordinate and perform the analysis of the Forecast and Budget for all lines of business. This role also involves monitoring product performance and trends on a monthly basis. The ideal candidate will work closely with various teams within the organization such as the Medicare, Medicaid or Trend Analytics team to gather input and communicate results of the Forecast and Budget. The position offers a hybrid work schedule in New York City.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Build and maintain models for analyzing historical medical trends, normalizing for the impacts of seasonality, fee schedules, benefits, population changes, etc.
  • Monitor and interpret the drivers of medical trends, including unit cost, utilization, mix, severity, etc.
  • Track and assess industry trend resources, applying insights as applicable.
  • Partner with other teams to align on emerging trends and provide actionable insights.
  • Develop projection trend assumptions/factors, including model and method development, to support actuarial functions such as reserving, forecasting, and pricing.
  • Participate in monthly close meetings, Quarterly Business Reviews, and the Annual Budget to explain medical trend experience, drivers, assumptions, and projections.
  • Manage and direct staff as needed, ensuring effective teamwork and collaboration.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Economics, Finance, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in the actuarial field related to Medical Trend.
  • Experience working with medical claims codes and datasets.
  • Proficiency in programming/coding, preferably with SAS, SQL, or Python.
  • Strong ability to collect, analyze, and summarize both qualitative and quantitative data.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • ASA (Associate, Society of Actuaries) membership.
  • MAAA (Member, American Academy of Actuaries) membership.
  • Prior experience managing one or more staff members.
